Judge Denies New Trial For Former Magistrate Bryant Cochran; Sentencing To Proceed

  • Saturday, April 4, 2015

Federal Judge Harold Murphy, in a 67-page opinion, has denied a new trial of finding of acquittal for former Murray County Magistrate Bryant Cochran.

He directed that the sentencing proceed for Cochran, who was found guilty on all six sex and corruption counts that he faced.

The panel heard over a week of prosecution testimony, but only a few defense witnesses. Cochran chose not to testify.

He was charged with allegedly planting evidence on the vehicle of a woman who said she spurned his advances when she was seeking a warrant.

He was also charged with alleged sexual advances on his chief clerk.

Two Murray County police officers and the Bryant handyman are already in prison on the case.
