A woman whose vehicle struck and seriously injured a firefighter who was directing traffic at an accident has been indicted by the Grand Jury.

Andrea Leeanne Payne, 42, has been arrested by traffic investigators and charged with DUI, vehicular assault, leaving the scene of a crash, failure to render aid, and failure to maintain lane.

Firefighter Lt. Lawerence Orear was assisting with directing traffic in the 7900 block of East Brainerd Road at a traffic crash that had occurred between the Burger King and Hardee's restaurants.

Based on witness information, the firefighter was standing on the double yellow line safely in the utility lane area flagging west bound traffic, police said.

While directing traffic through the utility lane (westbound), a red Mercedes driven by Ms. Payne was traveling (eastbound) in the lane closest to the utility lane.

Ms. Payne did not observe the firefighter and struck him sending him over the passenger side of her vehicle, police said.
