An investigation by special agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has resulted in the indictment and arrest of a former sergeant with the Mt. Juliet Police Department on charges of theft and official misconduct.

In April, at the request of 15th District Attorney General Tommy Thompson, TBI special agents began investigating a complaint of possible theft committed by then-Mt. Juliet Police Department Sergeant Jason Ezell. During the course of the investigation, agents developed information that between June 2014 and April 2015, the City of Mt. Juliet paid Ezell for $14,180 in overtime that he claimed he worked but did not actually work. The investigation also revealed that $1,600 in cash, which was supposed to be used to conduct undercover operations, was missing. Agents determined Ezell, who was assigned to the department’s Crime Suppression Unit, was the individual responsible for the missing funds. The department subsequently terminated Ezell’s employment.

On Monday, the Wilson County Grand Jury returned an indictment, charging Ezell, 40, with two counts of theft and one count of official misconduct. The Lebanon man was arrested Thursday evening and booked into the Wilson County Jail on a $2,500 bond.
