A $1,000 check has been presented to the local chapter of Susan G. Komen, thanks to a month-long campaign to support the fight against breast cancer. During the month of October, FIVE and the Plastic Surgery Group, Chattanooga’s first and largest plastic surgery practice, teamed up to launch #DrinkPink, an effort to raise funds and increase awareness for breast cancer, a disease that impacts millions of people.
As part of its commitment to supporting breast cancer awareness month, FIVE, backed by marketing support from the Plastic Surgery Group, sold pink mimosas to restaurant patrons for $5 a piece. More than 150 were sold during the campaign, totaling nearly $1000. All of the proceeds will benefit Susan G. Komen.
“Komen Chattanooga is so appreciative of this donation and the support of the Komen Mission. We all know someone, love someone or are someone who will battle this disease. Thank you FIVE and Plastic Surgery Group for joining us in the fight,” said Anita Stewart, Operations Director at Susan G. Komen in Chattanooga.
The money will be used to fund local community grants that provide educational programs and local services such as mammograms, screenings and diagnostics for women and men who could not otherwise afford them. Komen grant funds also support programs that provide emergency funding, bra and wig banks, transportation and support groups for those battling breast cancer.
“We are thrilled to be able to present this check today. We hope the proceeds from DrinkPink will go a long way towards ending this terrible disease,” said FIVE owner Cris Eddings.
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death in women. It is estimated about one in eight women born in the United States will get breast cancer at some point, but it is treatable if detected early.
“Lives are being saved every day thanks to early detection. We hope people will be vigilant about getting checked, not just during the month of October, but all year round,” said Dr. Jimmy Waldrop of the Plastic Surgery Group.
