Food Lion volunteers serve at Lee’s Food Bank
Food Lion awarded a $5,000 grant to Lee University’s Food Bank. A group of representatives from Food Lion and the Chattanooga Area Food Bank visited the university to volunteer on campus for the day.
As part of its “Feed Great Pantry Makeover” initiative, Food Lion contacted the Chattanooga Area Food Bank for recommendations for the grant. After being considered with three other candidates, Lee University was chosen to receive the funds, which Lee used to purchase new freezers and a cooler for its food bank.
"We are thankful for our corporate food bank partners," said Dr. William Lamb, director of the Leonard Center at Lee. "Their consistent and substantial contributions enable Lee students to meet the needs of others both on and off campus.”
According to Tyler Shores, special projects assistant at the Leonard Center, the Food Bank incorporates multiple functions. Student ministries such as Crossover and Street Reach use donated food items to reach their own clients. Some donations are sent to other local feeding organizations to help supplement their programming, while another percentage is made available for students at Lee who are in need and are not on a meal plan.
“I believe the greatest impact of our efforts on campus and in the community with the Food Bank will be seen down the road,” said Mr. Shores. “There are immediate and legitimate needs that are being met both in the community and on campus. More than just giving access to food for those who are hungry, student leaders are invited to wrestle with the real needs of a community and are given the opportunity to bring solutions with resources acquired through the Food Bank.”
