Attorney General Slatery Names Solicitor General

  • Thursday, October 23, 2014
Tennessee Attorney General Herbert Slatery announced that Andrée Sophia Blumstein will join the office as solicitor general.   Mrs. Blumstein will oversee appellate litigation in state and federal courts, review written opinions, and advise the attorney general.

“I could not be more pleased that Andrée has accepted this important appointment,” Attorney General Slatery said.  “The office of solicitor general has had a long history of excellent legal work.  Andrée will enhance that.
Her extensive trial and appellate experience and her academic credentials are surpassed only by the type of person she is and the respect she already enjoys in the legal community,” Mr. Slatery said.

For the past 21 years, Mrs. Blumstein has been a partner at the Nashville firm of Sherrard & Roe, PLC where she concentrated on appellate litigation, health law, taxation, and antitrust.

“I am honored and privileged that General Slatery has given me the opportunity to serve as solicitor general,” Mrs. Blumstein said.  “I look forward to working with the outstanding professionals at the Attorney General’s Office.”

Mrs. Blumstein graduated from Vanderbilt University School of Law, where she was elected to membership in the Order of the Coif and was research editor of the Vanderbilt Law Review.  She also holds a Ph.D. in Germanic languages and literature from Yale University.  She earned her undergraduate degree magna cum laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa at Vassar College.

Mrs. Blumstein is married to James F. Blumstein, Vanderbilt University professor of Constitutional Law and Health Law & Policy director.

Mrs. Blumstein succeeds Acting Solicitor General Joe Whalen, who will continue in an important role with the solicitor general’s office.
