Elizabeth Cline will speak on the high cost of cheap fashion

Atlanta by Six is just one of many musical groups to perform this semester at Dalton State
Dalton State College will offer an array of cultural events this semester, ranging from concerts and history to book lectures and guest speakers. Sponsors include the Fine Arts and Lecture Series, the Bandy Heritage Center, Derrell C. Roberts Library, and Dalton State’s School of Liberal Arts. All events below are free and open to the public.
“We have an exciting schedule of events this semester, and we are pleased to share the cultural and intellectual resources of the College with the community,” said President Dr. John O. Schwenn.
Among the upcoming activities are:
· Craig Johnson, a well-traveled classical conductor and multi-instrumentalist, will perform a free concert Friday, Jan. 24, at 7:30 pm in Goodroe Auditorium of Gignilliat Memorial Hall at Dalton State. Marrying the genres of American folk, Jazz, classical, and Finnish music, among others, Johnson’s recital promises to be an interesting and varied program.
· Concert celebrating the flute’s beautiful acoustics and its place in musical history. Flutist John Davis, joined by Kris Carlisle on piano and Ellie Jenkins on horn, will perform a free concert in Goodroe Auditorium at Dalton State College on Monday, Jan. 27, at 7:30 pm.
· Elizabeth Cline, author of “Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion,” will present a lecture on Americans’ fashion gluttony and how its disadvantages far outweigh its benefits on Thursday, Jan. 30, 6:30 pm, in Goodroe Auditorium. The money poured each year into cheap clothing, the impact it has on outsourcing labor to countries overseas, and ways to be a responsible shopper will be discussed.
· Atlanta by Six, an innovative chamber music ensemble made up of professional musicians from the Atlanta area, will perform a concert on Tuesday, Feb. 4,at 7:30 pm in Goodroe Auditorium. The musicians have performed with the Atlanta Opera, Atlanta Ballet, Carroll Symphony, Georgia Symphony, and Rome Symphony Orchestra, among others.
· The Bandy Heritage Center for Northwest Georgia presents the 2014 Civil War in the Western Theater Colloquium. This year’s presentation, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia: The Atlanta Campaign,” will feature four lectures and discussions about the series of battles that happened in this area during the summer of 1864. Local historians Dr. Keith Bohannon, Dr. Richard McMurry, Robert Jenkins, Sr., and Dr. Steve Davis will speak. The seminar will take place in the Lecture Hall of the NorthWest Georgia Trade and Convention Center on Saturday, Feb. 8, from 9 am to 4 pm.
· A concert featuring Wes Crider, a fingerstyle guitarist, will take place in Goodroe Auditorium on Monday, Feb. 10, at 7:30 pm.
· On Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 7:30 pm, there will be a lecture presentation, video screening, and panel discussion with Chang-Jin Lee, author of “Comfort Women: Military Sex Slavery in WWII Japan” in Goodroe Auditorium. Mature content not suitable for children.
· The Fifth Annual Dalton State College Book Festival will take place Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 6:30 pm in Room 105 of the James E. Brown Center. This year’s guest is Kimberly Brock, Georgia Author of the Year for 2013, who will speak on her bestselling novel “The River Witch.”
· On Sunday, April 6, at 3 pm, Chamber Players of the South will perform a concert in Goodroe Auditorium. They will be presenting music written by Stravinsky and Strauss.
