Mayor Andy Berke signed a proclamation on Sunday, designating Chattanooga as the first “Trail Town” of the Great Eastern Trail at the Tennessee Riverpark’s Amnicola Marsh Pavilion.

Also present were Tom Johnson, president of the Great Eastern Trail Association, and Alison Bullock, community planner with the National Park Service who served as the emcee at the ceremony.

In his remarks, Mr. Johnson mentioned a bit of history about the Appalachian Trail and how the decision was made to have it go to Springer, Ga., instead of to Lookout Mountain.

He said the routing of the Great Eastern Trail through Chattanooga now takes care of having Lookout Mountain be on the route of a major long-distance trail.
