Covenant Softball Splits with Concordia

The wait is over for the Covenant softball team. After dropping their first eight games of the season, the Lady Scots used a six-run fourth inning to claim a 9-6 victory over Concordia (Mich.) on Thursday afternoon. The Lady Scots fell 5-3 in the second game as Concordia scored two runs in the seventh to claim the win.

Covenant moves to 1-9 on the season, while Concordia goes to 1-1.

Jenni Jobe and Courtney Wagoner each went 2-for-4, while Jobe had two RBIs and two runs scored. Kendall Whann finished 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, while Chandler Shepherd added a hit and scored two runs.

Starter Cori Hilt (1-3) notches her first win of the season.

Hilt went all seven innings allowing two earned runs on six hits.

Covenant scored six runs on seven hits in the fourth inning to turn a 3-1 edge into a 9-1 lead. All six runs came with two outs. Shepherd doubled home Morgan Booker, Whann then scored on a wild pitch, followed by RBI singles from Madison Quirk and Jobe. Lauren Johns capped the inning with a triple down the right field line, scoring Jobe, to make it 9-1.

Concordia answered with five runs in the fifth inning, but Hilt settled down and worked her way out of a jam.

Madison Brewer (0-1) gets the loss for Concordia after she allowed five earned runs in 3.2 innings. Kristina Butcher was 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Cardinals (0-1).

Concordia scored two runs in the top of the seventh to break a 3-3 tie and claim a 5-3 win in the second game of the doubleheader.

Trailing 1-0 in the third inning, Covenant tied the score at 1-1 with an RBI single from Wagoner. Concordia answered with two runs in the fourth, but the Lady Scots responded with single runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.

In the fourth, Morgan Lane led off the inning with a triple and then scored on a wild pitch a batter later. The Lady Scots knotted the game up in the fifth when Lane drove home Jobe with an RBI ground out.

Lane finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for Covenant. Shepherd, Wagoner, and Jobe each earned hits as well.

Hannah Rogers (0-4) gets the loss for Covenant. Hilt pitched well in game two as she went 4.1 innings, allowing three earned runs.

Corinna Rotondo (1-0) notches the victory for Concordia as she pitched all seven innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits.

Covenant will play a doubleheader at Truett-McConnell in Cleveland, Ga., on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m.
