The City Council on Tuesday night voted to approve a consent decree aimed at dealing with periodic sewage discharges into the Tennessee River at times of heavy rainfall.
Officials did not disclose the amount of the settlement, though earlier officials of the Hamilton County Water and Wastewater Treatment Authority pegged it at $100 million.
The settlement is with the federal Environmental Protection Agency, the state Department of Environment and Conservation and the Tennessee Clean Water Network, which sued the city over the discharges.
City Attorney Mike McMahan met with the council privately on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the decree.
The city is the last party to sign the document.
