Running Of The Chihuahuas 5 Returns As Chattanooga’s Cinco De Mayo Tradition

  • Tuesday, April 17, 2012

Hits 96, WDOD-FM, will celebrate Cinco de Mayo by holding the 5th annual Running of the Chihuahuas presented by Corona on Saturday, May 5, at 2 p.m. at the First Tennessee Pavilion. In 2011, over 2,000 Chattanoogans witnessed the crowning of the fastest Chihuahua in Chattanooga.  In 2012, Chattanooga’s Cinco de Mayo tradition returns to the Pavilion, bigger than ever.

After years of support and last year’s record turnout, The Running of the Chihuahuas 5 is expanding to include live music, interactive activities, and more racing Chihuahuas.  Event organizer and afternoon personality Brad Steiner says, “Due to the increased interest in our event, we are adding more participants from 96 to 128 racing Chihuahuas.  This event grows bigger every year.  My dream of one day holding it at Bristol Motor Speedway is getting closer to reality.”

Station Manager Danny Howard says, “We are blessed that our community has embraced this event and continues to make it grow.  Local sponsors are seeing the possibilities and are adding their name to the event, which makes its impact that much bigger.” Mr. Steiner adds, “As the event grows larger, we are able to bring amazing bands to Chattanoogans for free.”

Not only will the winning racer get its weight in prizes, owners and spectators can win prizes and enjoy showcase performances from major recording artists Megan & Liz, Outasight, and BoysLikeGirls.

Registration is open and available at www.hits96.com on a first come – first serve basis.  Spectators and press are encouraged to participate, for free, starting at 2 at the First Tennessee Pavilion.  Music begins at 3 p.m. and racing begins at 6 p.m. If interested, sponsors are being accepted by Jeff Fontana, sales manager, at 321-6200.  A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Goodwill Assistance Dog Academy.
