Robert L. Gill, 85, of Rome, Georgia, died on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 in Chattanooga, at the residence of his daughter.

Mr. Gill was born in Webster, Ga., on Aug. 31, 1926, the son of the late Joseph Gill and Laura Cooper Gill.  He had been a resident of Rome since 1942 moving here with his mother and brother Bill.  His first job was with Southeastern Mills.  

Prior to coming back to Rome he joined the Western Southern Insurance Company in Chattanooga.  Mr. Gill retired from Liberty National in August, 1986, as manager and also had worked with Liberty National in Nashville. Mr. Gill proudly served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army during December, 1944 through December, 1946.  While in the service he received the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon, the Philippine Independence Ribbon, Victory and two overseas service bars and a marksman with the rifle.  

Mr. Gill was a member of Pleasant Valley South Baptist Church.  

In addition to his parents, Mr. Gill was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Dell Gill on Dec. 25, 2003, to whom he was married on September 24, 1948; brothers, Arthur Gill and William Gill; by sister, Mary Protho and by two infant brothers and one infant sister.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Spike Barnes of Chattanooga, and son, Tony Gill of Rome; granddaughter, Courtney Kittle and great-granddaughter, Aimee Kittle of Chattanooga; grandson, Chris Barnes and his wife Bethany of Sugar Valley, Ga. Special nephews and nieces also survive.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, March 30, at 2 p.m. at the Pleasant Valley South Baptist Church with his pastor, Dr. Philip May and Pastor Barry Gay of the Church of the Nazarene officiating.  Private graveside interment for family only will be in Oakland Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Friday, March 30, from 1 p.m. until the funeral hour at the Pleasant Valley South Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Shiloh Marion Baptist Church which is the church of the Gill family, c/o Mrs. Ann Barnes, 153 North Crest Road, Chattanooga, Tn. 37404 or Gideons International, c/o P.O. Box 281, Lindale, Ga. 30147.

The following gentlemen will serve as honorary pallbearers: Jimmy Blair, Gene Spears, Larry Nelson, Don Mullins, Rev. Billy Fricks and William Terry.
