Local Math Whiz Kids Compete At Berry College

Berry College recently the spring 2012 6th-grade Berry College Mathematics Contest.   

Of the 15 sixth-grade teams that competed at the event, Pickens County Middle School placed first,   Armuchee Middle School (Floyd County) placed second and Heritage Middle School (Catoosa County) took third place.   Top student winners were:  Ryan Harris (Heritage) in first place,  Reid Blackmon (St. Mary’s Catholic School, Rome) in second place and Chase Garland (Pickens County Middle School) in third.

Participating schools included Armuchee Middle, Berry College Elementary and Middle School (Rome), Coosa Middle School (Floyd County), Dade Middle School (Dade County), Elm Street Elementary School (Rome), Fort Payne Middle School (Fort Payne, Ala.), Gilmer Middle School (Gilmer County), Heritage Middle School, Jasper Middle School (Pickens County), LaFayette Middle School (Walker County), Main Elementary School (Rome), Pepperell Middle School (Floyd County), Pickens County Middle School (Pickens County), St.
Mary’s Catholic School and Sonoraville Middle School (Gordon County).
 
Berry College hosts the competition to promote and encourage mathematical excellence. Several Berry students and faculty members worked at the event. Associate Professor of Mathematics Education Martha Tapia is the faculty supervisor for the event.
