Hostage Negotiators Convince Him To Surrender

Chattanooga Police hostage negotiators and East Ridge SWAT members negotiated for several hours with a man threatening to harm himself in East Ridge on Wednesday.

Officers responded to 717 Summit Ave. after learning that Leondra P. Smith, 37, had a handgun and was threatening to harm himself.

After several hours of negotiations Smith surrendered to officers without further incident. A .38 caliber handgun was recovered from the scene.

Smith was transported to Parkridge East Hospital for a psychological evaluation.

After he was evaluated by medical staff he was transported to the Hamilton County Jail and charged with assault.
