Frances May Doss, 87, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009, at Piedmont Health Care Center in Piedmont, Ala.
Mrs. Doss was an Illinois native and had been a Piedmont resident for the past four years. She was the valedictorian of her high school class, was a retired accountant from Wildwood, Ga., Hospital, was a charter member of Piedmont Seventh-day Adventist Church, was a published author, world traveler and ham radio operator.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Wesley Duman; her second husband, Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Desmond T. Doss; and a daughter, Marilyn Shadduck.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas Albert (Diane) Duman, of Hixson, and Michael J. (Tracy) Duman, of Piedmont; eight grandchildren, Dan Plummer, Lois Assink, Sharon Crosby, John Plummer, Julie Hoffman, Marvin Plummer, Christopher Jay Duman and Jonathon Michael Duman, several great-grandchildren; and one sister, Elizabeth Manley-Kemmerer.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 6 p.m. CST at Piedmont Seventh-day Adventist Church with Pastor Rick Blythe officiating.
Graveside services will be Friday at 11 a.m. (EDT) at Chattanooga National Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be David Hamilton, Darryl Freeman, Jimmy Woodfin, Sam Davis, Chuck Fender and Michael Abraham. Honorary pallbearer will be Sid Argo.
The family will receive friends from 3-6 p.m. CST Thursday at the church.
