Dr. Virgil L. Bartlett, 92, of Ooltewah, died peacefully with family at his side on Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008 at his home.

Born in Roswell, N.M., he lived most of his life in Michigan before moving to the Ooltewah/Collegedale area nine years ago. He was a member of the McDonald Road Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Dr. Bartlett received his Masters degree from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas and his Doctorate degree from Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. He served as a high school principal in New York, North Dakota and Indiana and also served as professor of Education at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Mi., for nearly 20 years.

He was inspirational in supporting higher education to all who knew him, working diligently with the Michigan Department of Education for many years.

While serving as missionaries, he and his wife founded Mountain View College in the Philippines. He was a member of the Collegedale Kiwanis Club, where he served as club historian. He also was a member of the Berrien Springs Lions Club in Berrien Springs.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances May Bartlett; and a brother, William Bartlett.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Verlyne and Wayne Starr, Ooltewah and Sandra and Ken Colburn, Cookeville, Tn.; four grandchildren, Chad Starr, Geoff Starr, Dwight Colburn and Tanya Colburn; four great-grandchildren; brother, Alvin Bartlett, Yuma, Az.; two sisters, Frances Craw, St. Helena, Ca., and Louise Wolcott, Lyles, Tn.; beloved caregiver, Marilyn Schneller.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the Valley View Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Pastor Paul Carlson, Pastor Don Gettys and Mr. Dan Agnetta officiating. Interment will be in Collegedale Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Valley View Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory & Florist, 7414 Old Lee Highway.
