DAVIES, David J.
Born Feb. 21, 1827 in Carmarthershire, Wales, he emigrated to the US at the age of 18 and learned the peddler's trade. He married Sarah Belle Ballard of Princeton, KY in 1857. A "strong Confederate," he did serve in army but was "impressed" into the iron industry where he worked throughout the war. Afterwards he was employed by the Roane Iron Co. here and in Birmingham. Old and thrown out of work by the Panic of 1892, he traded his Chattanooga home for farmland near Valley Head, AL. Perfect teeth and "as if to confound and confuse the diet seekers after longevity, he was alaways a hearty eater, eating everything and anything." He also began smoking at age 88. He was Senior Warden at Thankful Memorial in St. Elmo. Died in St. Elmo, March 24, 1917 and buried in FH. [CT March 3, 1917; FHR]

DEADERICK, William Wallace 1Lt. Co. F, 37TN
Born Aug. 4, 1842 in Boyle Co., KY, he was son of Chief Justice James W. Deaderick. One of six brothers in CSA, he enl. on his birthday in 1861 at Knoxville. He fought at Murfreesboro, Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge. Wounded at Perryville and at Murfreesboro. Paroled as 1Lt. at Augusta, GA in May, 1865.
He died in Chatt. March 10, 1913 and was buried in CSA Cemetery. [CT March 11, 1913; NBFM2]

Born in Cocke County, TN, he was a 45 year-old farmer residing at Sale Creek when he enl. Oct. 17, 1861, at Ooltewah. He was discharged Nov. 5, 1862. He had a fair complexion, gray eyes and was 5'10" tall.

DEMENT, Thomas J. 6VA Cav.
Born Washington, D.C. in 1838. Prior to war was clerk in Treasury Dept. Enl. April 1, 1861 in the Beauregard Rifles, then transferred to the 6VA Cav. and was wounded at Cedar Run, VA. He had the "physique of Joe Wheeler." To Chatt. from Athens in early 1880's. Member of firm of Dement, Baird & Co. which sold farm implements and seeds. Appointed postmaster by President Cleveland. Exec. Comm., NBF Camp, 1894. Died Sept. 19, 1915 at his home on Wyatt St. and buried CSA cem. [CT Sept. 20, 1915; NBFM2,7]

Born in McMinn Co., c1840, son of James (German) and Matilda (Irish) Dennis. Attended school "about ten years." "Plowed and hoed and general farm work." Enl. April, 1862 in Meigs Co. Discharged July 12, 1863 at Vicksburg. Missionary Baptist. Farmer in Soddy in Sept., 1922. Died 2 April 1924, age 81. Active Baptist 58 years.[TVQ; CT April 3, 1924]

DENT, Charles J. Co. H, 2TN Cav. (Ashby's)
The eldest son of Col. Jarrett Gray Dent, he ran away to join the Confederate army. He was 16 at the time the war started. Inseparable from his first cousin Lewis Shepherd, Dent also attended Aldehoff's and enl. at age 15 in a Texas cavalry regiment. Placed on detached duty as q.m. sgt. Aug. 1, 1861, but returned to 2TN Cav. Aug. 12, 1862 and disch. underage Sept. 15, 1862. Long after the war he was in charge of a saw mill at Kinder, LA and he died Aug. 25, 1910 in Alexandria. DENT, Jarrett Gray Co. A, 4TN Cav.
He cast his lot with the Confederacy "at the first tap of the drum." He enl. along with other recruits of Capt. William Ragsdale on Aug. 1, 1861, at Knoxville. He was named as asst. q.m. for 4TN Cav. Bn. He was still serving as q.m. and as paymaster the following August when he resigned from the army. He said he was doing so because he and others "recenty contracted to make salt for the people of this state." Dent, before the war, was a railroad contractor who came to HC in the late 1840s to build the Western and Atlantic Railroad into town. Later, he helped construct the East TN and GA Railroad. After his first wife died, he married Mary Donahoo, sister of the wife of Col. Lewis Shepherd. In 1854, the Dents built a stately two-story home with a tall portico in front on his 250-acre "Bonny Oaks" farm near Tyner. After the war, he built levees on the Mississippi River and eventually moved to Dallas, TX, where he erected the Main Street Railroad. He died at Dallas in 1880.

DEVALCOURT, Alex 2nd Co., Washington Artillery of NO.
Born and raised in New Orleans, he was a 20 year-old clerk when he enl. March 10, 1862. He was detailed to the battalion ordnance train June 20, 1863 and paroled in May, 1865. He moved to Chattanooga after the war where he was a barber and sometime bookkeeper. Member of NBF Camp, 1895-96. Died April 14, 1914 in Birmingham, AL and buried in LA. [NBFM2,4]

DEVOLI, John C. Clark's Independent Cavalry Co.
Born June 18, 1841 at Geneva [sic], Italy, son of Dumam and Catharine Devoli of Sardinia, Italy. His father was a merchant at Chattanooga prior to the war. Enl. Aug. 31, 1862 at Chatt. Orderly for Gen. S.B. Buckner and dispatch bearer at Chick. Capt. Dec. 13, 1864 in fight with Stoneman at Kingsport and imp. at Camp Chase. Released May 13, 1865. Awarded Cross of Honor by Gen. A.P. Stewart Chapter, UDC. Died May 9, 1922 at his home on Missionary Ridge. Bachelor. [NBFM2,7; CT May 10, 1922]

DEWITT, William Henry Co. I, 28TN
Born Oct. 24, 1827 in Smith Co., TN, the son of the Rev. Samuel Dewitt and a Miss McWhirter. A school teacher in Macon and Jackson Counties, he studied law and practiced in Carthage. He became a member of the General Assembly, 1855-57. He served in the Confederate Congress, 1861-62. Moving to Chatt. in 1875 where he died April 11, 1896. Married (1847) Emelia Price who died in 1863 as did two of their children. Married (1867) Elizabeth Wilson in Smith Co. Buried FH. [McBride, TN Gen Assemb.; CT April 12, 1896; GHT, 931-32]

DIAL, Jonathan Jackson Co. G, 35GA
Born at Walton Co., GA, 1845. Married (Milton Co., GA). Wife was Martha C. Yeargin. Enl. Feb. 27, 1862 and badly wounded near Hanover Junction, VA, May 22, 1864. He was an ambulance driver in early 1865 and capt. at Amelia Courthouse, April 5, 1865. Released from Point Lookout, June 26, 1865. He died in North Chatt., Oct. 6, 1920 and buried Tullahoma. DICKERSON, Arthur C. "Jack" Co. B, 1AL Rifles
Born in GA, 41yrs. Enl. Feb. 17, 1861 in Eufaula Rifles. Carriage trimmer in Chatt. in 1887. Married (1888, in Chatt.) Martha Emeline Burk who had been previously married. Sent to Soldiers Home at Nashville, where he died, Oct. 23, 1912. [NBFM2; TCSH; TWP 5884]

DICKEY, John P. Co. G, 43TN; Co. G, 2TN (Ashby's) Cav.
Born Jan 1, 1844 in Monroe Co., TN. Enl. June, 1862 at Charleston, TN. Afterwards joined Co. G, 2TN (Ashby's) Cav. Capt. Aug. 3, 1863 at Danville, KY. Released from prison at close of war. Married Adelia Bates, sister of Creed Bates. Teacher and Methodist minister in Chatt. for nearly 50 years. Died at Los Angeles. [NBFM2; CT Feb. 28, 1912]

DICKINSON, Laurence Thomsen Co. A, 2VA (1MD) Cav.
Born June 21, 1843 in Cumberland Co., MD, son of William T. and Laetitia Jones Dickinson, he enl. Aug. 25, 1862. After Sharpsburg, his company became part of a MD cav. battalion and served as scouts and couriers for Gen. Richard S. Ewell in the Gettysburg campaign. He was wounded at Morton's Ford, Oct. 11, 1863 and captured at Brandy Station. He was imprisoned at the Old Capitol prison and at Point Lookout. Upon his exchange he rejoined the MD cav. bn. and saw constant duty from Beaver Dam to Yellow Tavern. He participated in Early's invasion of MD and was severely wounded in right shoulder at Frederick July 7, 1864 and captured again while in hospital and imprisoned at Point Lookout. He was exchanged again at Savannah in Dec., 1864, returned to Richmond, but was too ill for field service. Finally had minie ball removed eighteen months after war.
After the war (Oct. 15, 1867) he married Mamie Hill Tidball and engaged in leather manufacturing. They moved to Chatt. in 1881 where he became supt. of the United States Leather Co. and president of the Board of Education. Episcopalian. Member of NBF Camp, 1895-96. Died March 31, 1923 in Keokuk, IA and buried CSA Cem. [CT Aug. 1, 1916; CV 2:207; NBFM4,7; Hist. St. Paul's, 173]

Born Apr. 22, 1845 in Barnwell Dist., SC. Enl. Feb., 1862 in Co. A, 1SC. ANV. Wounded at Sharpsburg and Gettysburg. Capt. at Gettysburg. Released Sept. 1, 1863. Surr. Appomatox April 9, 1865. Married (1866) Emma I. Eubanks. Methodist and lived for some time in Williston, SC. Carpenter in St. Elmo. He died March 27, 1901 at res. on East 4th St. and buried CSA Cem. Born Greenville, TN, Nov. 28, 1843, and raised there. Fought in 12 battles including the siege of Port Hudson and Baker's Creek. Captured in Sept., 1864 following the Battle of Piedmont and imp. Fort Delaware. Unmarried. Presby. Lived at Tunnel Hill, GA, then moved to Chatt. in 1876, but "has never been able since the war to make a support." Died May 29, 1920 and buried White Oak Cem. DIVINE, John Lowry
Employed by the CSA as guide and purchasing agent, he was captured after the battle of Missionary Ridge and placed in the prison at Fourth and Market. Later, he was released on parole through the influence of his former neighbor, William Crutchfield. Divine was a pioneer settler at Ross's Landing. Born in 1818 at Maryville, he was the son of Irish immigrants, Patrick and Mary O'Connor Divine. He married Elizabeth Williams first and then Rachel James. He built up a substantial fortune in real estate, livestock trading and a flouring mill. The Divine home was on West Ninth St.

Born in Dekalb Co., GA, Feb. 20, 1835, son of Samuel and Rebecca Gardner Dodson, he was in the thick of the fighting at Snodgrass Hill and Missionary Ridge. "Shot through the head just below the brain at Missionary Ridge." Wounded and permanently disabled at Kennesaw Mountain, June 19, 1864. After the war he practiced law in Ringgold, GA, and served in the GA Legislature. In 1871, he moved his law practice to Chatt. He was one of the founders of the Central Baptist Church. Dodson helped develop Sherman Heights in East Chattanooga, and Dodson Avenue was named for him. He was active in the early years of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park. Born 1844 in TN, he enl. July 14, 1862, then was captured at Chickamauga. His father, the Rev. Hiram Douglas of Ooltewah, was a prominent Unionist. He went to Gen. George Thomas in Chattanooga and was able to gain the release of William C. Douglas as well as Luke Arnett, who had married a daughter of Rev. Douglas. War records say that W. C. Douglas deserted in Ooltewah Valley on Sept. 26, 1863 and took USA oath. His mother was Caroline Warnock. The Douglas family sold their 200 acre farm at Ooltewah and moved to Arkansas along with the Arnetts after the war. [JWilson Douglas family; 1860 HC Census]

DOUTHIT, Anthony "Tony" C. Barry's Btry.
He enl. April 25, 1862 at Chattanooga. He was captured at Atlanta on Sept. 2, 1864, and imprisoned at Camp Douglas, IL. On March 26, 1865, enl. in Co. F of the Sixth USA Volunteers. His father, Ira Douthit, was a Baptist minister at Chattanooga prior to the war. His mother was Nancy Douthit. He was about 22 when he joined Barry's Battery. He was involved in railroading prior to the war.

Became a contractor and built the old courthouse, the auditorium for the University of Chattanooga and the first three story building in the city. He married (1867) Mary Sullivan (1848-1925). Catholic. Died March 4, 1916, age 76, at res. on West 3rd St. and buried at Mt. Olivet. [CT March 5, 1916]

Born Dec. 19, 1836, son of James P. and Mahala Childress Doyle, he moved with his family to Ringgold in 1845 and in 1856 to Kansas. There Doyle's father and two brothers were murdered by John Brown and when Brown was to be hanged in 1859, Gov. Wyse of VA gave him the privilege of springing the trap of the gallows which Doyle declined. Doyle and his mother returned to Chattanooga and Doyle enl. June 17, 1861 at Knoxville. He was detailed as a teamster at one time and at another was sick in the hospital. Paroled April 1865. After serving four years under Wheeler and Ashby, Doyle located in Rome, GA and married (1867) Cleopatra Ann Clowdis. They moved to Chatt. in 1896. He died at res. on E. 10th St., Dec. 29, 1922 and was buried CSA Cem. [TWP, 223; CT Dec. 30, 1922; TP8499]

DRAKE, George M.
Described by Chatt. historian Charles McGuffey as a "practical printer, careful scholar, forceful and eccentric man, with strong convictions," he worked for the Chattanooga Commercial, then was in journalism in Knoxville. He worked in the Post Office in Washington, DC, then retired on Lookout Mtn. He married Mary Clarke (1860, Union Springs, AL). Mrs. Drake was born in AL and buried FH. EDWARDS, Lt. James S. Co. A, 4TN Cav.
He was one of the Chattanooga merchants who joined the unit of fellow storeowner William Ragsdale. He also served as a lieutenant in the 19TN Infantry. Born in VA in 1815, he had come to Chattanooga (then Ross's Landing) in 1835 in a wagon train from Leesburg. One of his ventures was Edwards Pills "for the relief of chills and fever." He was a Chattanooga alderman on several occasions prior to the war. He lost much of his estate due to the war. Edwards died June 10, 1897 at the home of his son-in-law, William Lauter, at Bluff View. Burial was at Citizens Cem. [CT, June 11, 1897]

Moved to Walker Co., GA after war where he was blacksmith, merchant and a Baptist preacher. Brutally attacked by Roscoe Marable, an ex-convict, Jan. 17, 1891, and died next day. Marable found guilty of first-degree murder and hanged in Walker Co. [Heritage of Walker Co.]

EWING, 1Lt. Calvin J. Co. K, 43TN
In the retreat from Port Gibson across Black River, Capt. J.N. Aikens reported that Ewing, ""who was in command of a small company of sappers and miners, in the face of a terrific fire from the advance guard of the enemy, cut up and destroyed the pontoon bridge upon which our army had just crossed the river. It was a daring act, gallantly performed." Before the war, he lived on a farm at Zion Hill south of Ooltewah with his wife Jane, their sons, John and Albert, and daughter, Mary. He had a worth of $10,000 in 1860. He was born about 1821.

FAIDLEY, Archibald

FAIDLEY, Charles Fenton Co. F, 7TN Cav. Bn.
He wrote his wife, Susan Fothergill Faidley, from near Sparta when he joined the Confederate troops, "Take good care of yourself and Annie and hope for the best. I know you have a hard time and so do I, but I will not be gone always. The parting with you and Annie was a hard one with me. I could hardly keep from shedding tears, but you know I never do cry--even if I want to. I think of you and Annie every minute in the day and I know very well that you think of me all the time. When I am at home with you I may appear cold and gloomy, but it is not because I love you less than I always did. For no earthly objects were ever loved better than my wife and child are by me. So you must put your trust in God and hope that we may live a happy and better life yet."
Charles F. Faidley survived the war and returned to his wife
and Annie. They later had Dora, Rose and Arch. The Charles
Faidleys moved to Walden's Ridge after refugeeing there during
the Yellow Fever epidemic of 1878. Charles F. Faidley died
several years after this epidemic.

FAIDLEY, Henry
He married Matilda Lynch in May, 1863 when he was 23, but then he marched away to war. Four months later, he was among the casualties on the bloody fields of Chickamauga. He was a son of Archibald Faidley, a Virginian who was an early printer at Chattanooga. His mother was Rosanna Young.

Born in HC c1845, he lived at Snow Hill prior to the war. He was apparently the son of David and Nancy Fairbanks. David Fairbanks, a native of MD, was age 73 in the 1860 census. Nancy Fairbanks, a native of VA, was 56 in the 1860 census. Richard Fairbanks enl. Oct. 19, 1862. He had blue eyes, light hair, fair complexion and was 6' tall.

Born Meigs Co., Sept. 2, 1842. His ancestry is said to date back to his great-great-grandfather, Matthew Norman, a lifelong friend of George Washington. Enl. "as a mere boy." Served throughout war (Ft. Donelson, M'boro, Chickamauga, Miss. Ridge, Atl. Camp., Franklin) and only received slight flesh wound. Capt. following Franklin and imp. at Camp Morton. Released at the close of the war, he stopped for water at the home of a widow of a Union veteran who had been killed at Resaca. After speaking with Cynthia A. He enl. Jan. 7, 1863, at Chatt. On the second day of the Battle of Chickamauga, Sept. 20, 1863, he was hit with a minie ball that passed through the upper part of his right leg, shattering two bones. His wife Nancy was able to reach him at Green's Lake and take him in an ox cart to their home at Ooltewah. He was captured while recuperating and took the oath of allegiance on Dec. 11, 1863. He had dark complexion, black hair, black eyes and was 5'11" tall. Woodson Fitzgerald was born in Franklin Co., GA, in 1827, the son of William Fitzgerald. He married Nancy Denny. He died in 1896. Born Sullivan Co., TN, March 24, 1835, son of Benjamin and Pensacola Hawley Ford. Family moved to Chatt. when he was a young boy. Afterward he returned to Chatt. and became a clerk. Married (1875) Rhoda Thomison. First wife Elizabeth Martin had died. For a while served as a member of the County Court. He died at his home on Dry Valley Rd. Jan. 20, 1913. He had married Mary S. Anthony Hancock in 1868. He was in the wholesale liquor business, then in wholesale tobacco, in Chatt. and was one of the first police commissioners under appointment from Gov. FORD, Rhoda Thomison (Mrs. James H.)
Born near Washington in Rhea Co. Nov. 10, 1842. 3d Lt. in cav, . company organized by young ladies around Washington to carry clothing, food and "such other necessities and delicacies as able to procure" to nearby CSA camps. Arrested and "marched, a foot, in front of an armed guard of soldiers to Dayton, a distance of five miles, and from there to Bell's Landing" on TN River. There the 16 young ladies placed aboard US army cattle boat, the Chicken Thief, and brought to Chatt. where Gen. Steedman ordered their release. Married JHF in Nov., 1873. Cumberland Presby. Died at her home on Dry Valley Road Dec. 8, 1918 and buried White Oak Cem. [CT Dec. 9, 1918]

FORD, Cpl. Thomas J. Barry's Btry.
The son of newspaper editor John W. Ford, he was a printer at Chatt. when the war broke out. He enl. April 25, 1862. He died in Knoxville on Nov. 9, 1862, of pneumonia. A native of HC, he was 31 yrs. He had a light complexion and gray eyes and was 5'11" tall. His wife was Hetty Ford.

Born in Milledgeville, GA, April 26, 1839, son of Dr. Tomlinson and Martha Low Fannin Fort, he graduated from Oglethorpe Univ. in 1857 and began the practice of law in Baldwin Co. Enl. Feb. 12, 1861 and elected Lt. Became Capt. of Co. L in May, 1862, and fought in VA, being wounded twice at Malvern Hill and once at Second Manassas. He was again wounded on John's Island, SC July 7, 1864. Capt. late 1864 and remained imprisoned until the surrender. His brother John Porter Fort was adjutant of the 1GA. In Oct., 1865 TF opened a law office in Chatt. He served as mayor, 1875-76. Died Dec. 7, 1910 at Res. on Chester St. and buried in Milledgeville, GA. [CWTI Collection, USAMHI; NBFM2,7]

FOUST, 1Lt. Francis Marion Hawley Co. A, 19TN
Born Nov. 10, 1837, he was a son of John and Matilda Hawley Foust. The Fousts came to HC from Sullivan Co. by flatboat in 1843. He was sent out for recruiting services when the unit was at Corinth, MS, and he later was detached for special service with Gen. Bragg. Beginning in February of 1863, he was responsible for securing quarters and accumulating fuel for the soldiers around Chattanooga. He stayed in Chattanooga until early September when the Federal army arrived. At the battle of Franklin, he was wounded in the face. Died Mar. 8, 1888. [CSR; 1860HC]

FOUST, Nathan Polk Co. A, 19TN; 2nd Co. K, 1CSA Cav.
Enl. May 21, 1861 at Knoxville in Co. A, 19TN, then on Sept. 20, 1862, joined in HC the 2nd Co. K, 1CSA Cav. He was discharged in 1863, but reenl. again, being paroled May 3, 1863 in Charlotte, NC. The son of John and Matilda Foust, "Polk" Foust was born July 11, 1842. A bachelor, he left Chatt. in 1878 to move to AR. He died at Winthrop, AR, in June, 1903. His remains were brought back to the old Foust burial ground at Morrison Springs. [CT, June 12, 1903]

FOUST, William Henry
Like three of his brothers, fought with Co. A, 19TN. He also enl. Sept. 20, 1862 in the 2nd Co. K, 1CSA Cav. with his brother "Polk." He enl. just after he had married (1861) Elizabeth A. Wisdom, daughter of Abner Wisdom. Foust was born Dec 18, 1829 in Sullivan Co. and settled in Morrison Springs in 1843. After the war Foust lived in HC until moving to a farm near Charleston in Bradley Co. in 1883. He died there Dec. 15, 1903. [CT, Dec. 16, 1903]

FOUTS, Oliver Perry
He was the clerk at the Crutchfield House when the famed encounter between Jefferson Davis and William Crutchfield occurred in the hotel lobby. Fouts later joined the employ of the Confederate government during the war.
The Fouts family was originally from Fincastle, VA. He was the son of John R. Fouts and Lucinda Stever. O.P. Fouts was born
in 1813 and named for the famous naval commander. After the war,
Fouts helped operate the Stanton House and he was a partner in a
stockyard with A.J. Wisdom. A bachelor, he built up a sizable fortune. His home was at 508 West Ninth Street where he died March 9, 1899. [CT March 10, 1899; NBFM2]

FRAZIER, Capt. Samuel Joseph Abner Co. D, 19TN
Born in 1840 at Rhea Co., Frazier was the son of a prominent lawyer and attorney general Samuel Frazier. He graduated from East TN Univ. at Knoxville just prior to the war. He enl. April 6, 1861, at Knoxville and was was elected captain May 29, 1861. He saw service at Cumberland and Big Creek gaps in KY, then at Fishing Creek. The unit was at Corinth, MS, then fought at Shiloh. They fought at Baton Rouge, LA, then returned to TN for the Battle of Murfreesboro. At Vicksburg, his regiment "has the unique experience of charging one of the enemy's gunboats." At Chickamauga, Frazier was seriously wounded by a shot through the windpipe. Two of his comrades were shot as they attempted to carry him off the field, and he suffered two more wounds as he lay on the ground. He was captured by the enemy and taken to Chatt., where he stayed some weeks at the home of the Rev. T. H. McCallie. He later was imprisoned at Camp Chase, OH, and Johnson's Island. While in prison, he continued his study of law by paying 50 cents a week for an old edition of Blackstone. He earned the money by making gutta percha rings for visitors.
Frazier moved to Chattanooga in 1882 and began the Hill City real estate development. He gave $10,000 toward the Walnut Street Bridge that connected Hill City with Chattanooga. He married (1871) Anna Keith. Died Dec. 11, 1921 and buried CSA Cem. [CSA Hist, v. 10, 480-81; Worsham, 215; TCWVQ, 2:851; GHT, 942; NBFM7; 1910HC]

Born c1822 in VA. Enl. Jan. 9, 1862 at Chatt. Transf. to Co. L of the 35TN. He fought at Murfreesboro. He was discharged on May 1, 1863 as "non-conscript." Prior to the war, he was a farm laborer living at Soddy, with his wife, Thursey (native of VA). In HC, 1870, with wife Thursey, 6 children. Farm laborer.

FRY, Martin Monroe Co. B, 3TN Cav.; 2TN Cav.
Born Aug. 19, 1844 in Giles Co., TN, son of Martin Fry. He enl. in spring, 1861 at Lynnville. Transferred early 1862 to Co. H, 1 Middle TN Cav. and fought at Shiloh, Farmington, Iuka and Corinth and cavalry fights at Coldwater and Coffeeville, MS. He also fought under Van Dorn at Thompson's Station and Forrest at Chickamauga and Sweetwater and under Wheeler on the latter's middle TN raid. He served under Henry Ashby in the Atlanta campaign. Again under Forrest he fought at Athens and Sulphur Trestle, AL and once again under Wheeler opposing Sherman's March to the Sea and Carolina Campaign. Accused of burning a bridge and killing a negro and held prisoner until Oct., 1865. Sentenced to be hanged but pardoned by Pres. Johnson. Farmer and contractor. Baptist. He moved to Chatt. about 1880 as a railroad contractor and lived in St. Elmo. Baptist. Died June 8, 1926 and buried CSA Cem. in joint funeral at Alton Meth. Later listed as being home suffering from wounds at Stone's River. Picked up in HC and sent to Louisville. Took USA oath and disch. July 16, 1864 to remain north of OH River. Married Julia Lovelady and, after her death, married her younger sister, Milly Lovelady. Died Dec. 31, 1897 and is buried in private cem. on Snow Hill Rd.

Born Athens, GA, Nov. 17, 1820, son of James and Mary Epsey Fulton. Practiced law in GA and was Mexican War veteran. Located in Atlanta where he became superintedent of Georgia State Railroad. Came to Chattanooga in 1852 and was elected mayor in 1857; founded and operated Bank of Chatt. until Federals occupied the city. Disappears until 1867 when he is found superintending the construction of the Maxwell House. Married Sarah M. J. Henderson. Moved to Williamson Co. in 1869 where he died Nov. 15, 1882. Represented Williamson and Maury cos. in TN Gen'l Assembly, 1877-79. [BDTA]
