The historic Walden Hospital on East Eighth Street is getting new life.

The long vacant brick structure was purchased in June by W.C. Hunter, of Pattentown Road.

It is currently being renovated for apartments.

The former hospital is located in a revitalized section of the MLK community. The handsome new UTC Place just went in across Douglas Street.

Dr. Emma Rochelle Wheeler, a graduate of Meharry Medical College, established Walden Hospital in 1915.

The historic marker outside says it was "established to meet the medical needs of Chattanooga's Negro community."

The hospital had a 30-bed capacity and at one time was staffed by 19 black doctors of the Mountain City Medical Society.

It served as a nursing school for 20 years prior to closing in June 1952.
