Fishbone Headlines Riverfront Nights Summer Music Series On Saturday

Wednesday, September 05, 2012

Riverfront Nights Summer Music Series is winding down with only two more concerts left. To celebrate returning college students, at 8 p.m., this Saturday's headliner, Fishbone, will be providing energetic, upbeat entertainment you don't want to miss.

Still a relative secret in the worlds of Pop and Rock music, Fishbone has released numerous innovative, clever, genre-bending, cult-classic albums like 'Fishbone', 'Truth and Soul', 'The Reality of My Surroundings' and 'Psychotic Friends Nuttwerx'.

Fishbone lives up to their legend as "the" group to bridge the gap between the funk of George Clinton and the blare of Rush. The classic, original Godfathers of Black Punk/Ska Funk, whose sound helped invent the "Red Hot Chili Peppers" are a perfect soundtrack to welcome home area college students.

Starting off the night at 7 p.m., Opposite Box will offer a whirlwind of genre-shifting excitement and mind-bending confusion landing somewhere between the  eclecticism of Mr. Bungle and the improvisational styling of The Secret Chiefs 3 and The Mars Volta. These guys harness the power of the "blaxaphone and 'bone combo" to put the smack down on all.

Saturday's "On the Green" event is Bike Night.

All shows are child and pet friendly.  Beer sales begin at 6:30 p.m. Local opening bands start around 7 p.m. and headliners kick into high gear promptly at 8 p.m., playing until around 10 p.m.

Eco-Friendly Businesses & Charities gather at the "green|spaces" tent.  This week will spotlight Land Trust for Tennessee.

The 'Dog Pound' under the Pup Tent will feature East Tennessee Alliance for Animals.

See All In The Timing, While There's Still Time

David Ives has been a staple of student scene nights for years now. Not because his writing is in anyway simple, but because it’s short. Here is a playwright who packs a lot into a little. In fact, most of his plays are barely more than the length of SNL sketches, though much more consistently funny. Think early Woody Allen meets Christopher Durang and you begin to approach the ... Scandals At Home And Abroad

Since my hip operation and time in recovery, I have tried to set aside things that are insignificant to me and to average Americans. Don't get me wrong here. What these people are doing (Bengahzi) is despicable be they left or right wing, and they have been doing it (both sides) for a long time. But the dirty deeds themselves carry little weight as to what they mean to you or me. ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: The Boy Who Dared To Speak

Jeff Bliss, an 18-year-old who is in the 10th grade because he dropped out of school last year, got kicked out of a Texas classroom a couple of weeks ago. But as he was exiting the room, he launched into the most wonderful rant that has ever been on the art of teaching children. He should know – his mom is a teacher. With his long hair waving almost as much as his arms, the teenager ... (click for more)
