Organizations Participate In Food Distribution To 800 Families

Saturday, August 04, 2012

Several organizations will collaborate to feed 800 hungry families in Chattanooga on Thursday, according to the event’s organizers.

The event will take place at The Crossing Church, 7501 Standifer Gap Road in Chattanooga. Food will be distributed from 9-11 a.m., and recipients are asked not to arrive early.

Families that would like to receive food at the distribution must pick up a voucher prior to Thursday at one of three locations:

·         Newton Child Development Center, 1301 Grove St.

·         The Chattanooga Community Kitchen, 727 E. 11th St.

·         The Salvation Army, 2140 E. 28th St.

Each family will receive a box of food and a box of personal hygiene items in exchange for their voucher. Vehicles picking up food for multiple families must have multiple vouchers.

“Hunger will cease to be a problem in America when we refuse to allow our neighbors to go hungry,” said Tom Henry, executive director of Feed America First, which is coordinating the food distribution with the help of OneGenAway. Feed America First and OneGenAway are both Franklin-based hunger relief agencies.

The food and personal hygiene items are being supplied through Feed the Children’s Nashville distribution center, and were paid for by a Chattanooga company that wishes to remain anonymous.

Several dozen volunteers will be needed at the event, and the public is invited to help distribute the food and direct traffic during the distribution.

Volunteers are asked to arrive at 8 a.m., and may be needed as late as noon.

Location Of The Delta Queen Is The Problem

The Delta Queen is a magnificent part of history and in many ways I'm pleased she is in town. Having the boat where she is is the problem. The boat blocks the view of and from the prettiest park in our town. The crew take many of the parking spots around the park leaving families to park across Frazier and schlep their kids, strollers and picnics to the park. You don't get fireworks ... (click for more)
