"Couch To 5K For The Cure" Training Begins Sunday

Thursday, August 02, 2012

Training begins this Sunday for beginners who want to run in the 5K Susan G. Komen race on Sept. 30. "Couch to 5K for the Cure" is a progressive 8-week training program designed to take you from the couch to running a 5k just in time for the Susan G. Komen “Race for the Cure”. The training program will be led by Chattanooga personal trainer, Clarissa Seales, of Scenic City Adventure Boot Camp.

This is the first time that Komen Chattanooga will be offering this type of training program for its participants.

According to Sheril Miller, Development Director for Komen Chattanooga, “Researchers have found that women have a lower risk of breast cancer when they exercise regularly. The Couch to 5k program will offer our participants a way to go from walking to running in 8 weeks. Participating in Komen Chattanooga’s Race for the Cure is great way to start. I’m going to participate in the Couch to 5k program myself.”

The group will meet every Sunday from 4:30-5:30 p.m. at the Tennessee Riverpark, to train together and receive their training homework for the week. They will then break off into groups throughout the week and/or can train on their own. Participants will be encouraged to commit to 2-3 training days per week, including Sundays. Each participant will receive training support and guidance from Mrs. Seales, a nationally-certified fitness professional throughout the program.

"We walk and run for 30 minutes, working on technique, pacing and heart rate, and gradually add in more running over the 8 weeks," explained Seales.

The fee for “Couch to 5k for the Cure” is $60 and includes free group training sessions to help build strength, reduce the chance of injury and improve athletic performance.

"This program is created for everyone; no matter what your level of fitness, you can do this program," Ms. Seales said. Call Scenic City Boot Camp at 870-6001 for more information.

Location Of The Delta Queen Is The Problem

The Delta Queen is a magnificent part of history and in many ways I'm pleased she is in town. Having the boat where she is is the problem. The boat blocks the view of and from the prettiest park in our town. The crew take many of the parking spots around the park leaving families to park across Frazier and schlep their kids, strollers and picnics to the park. You don't get fireworks ... (click for more)
