Chickamauga: The lake is full. The surface water temperature is in the low 80's. Bass anglers
are catching fish at the usual summer locations that include humps, points and ledges located
in or adjacent to the main lake. The river flats and banks are holding more fish it seems than
typical for the season. Anglers are in these areas as often as around the humps and points.
Plastic worms, crankbaits and jigs are being used for bait more often than the alternatives.
Many crappie are being caught in the community holes around docks. Some docks always hold
fish and others never hold fish. Trial and error will narrow the search. Drops under the docks
will help narrow the search. Those seeking something more challenging and rewarding when
average weights are compared are catching open water crappie around ledges. Large water
bay areas are the target locations and structure or ledges in the same location becomes the
bullseye. Minnows and jigs are being used for bait more often. Drifters in the upper end of the
lake are catching numerous bluegill along the bottom while using worms or crickets for bait.
Catfish are being caught by many while using meaty baits that may come from several sources
which may include pigs or chickens. Striped bass are being caught by several anglers in the
tailwaters. Timing, bait selection and presentation may determine whether the day is memorable
or forgettable. The fish are there.
Cordell Hull: Fishing is fair. Water temperature is 86 degrees. Lake is stable. A few bass are
being caught on topwater baits, while chasing shad on the main lake. Several white bass are
being caught while chasing shad on the main lake with small crankbaits. A few walleye are
being caught near Celina while trolling 18-to-20 feet of water with deep-running crank baits.
Dale Hollow: Fishing is fair. Water temperature is about 85 degrees; lake is falling. A few
bass are being caught at night on spinnerbaits and soft plastics, on points, in 20 feet of water.
Walleye fishing is fair with a few fish being caught, while jigging spoons on breaks, in 30 feet of
water. Trout fishing is fair near the dam, while trolling 45-to-60 feet of water with spoons.
Nickajack: The lake is steady and surface temperature readings are averaging 83 degrees.
Grass edges along the main channel are target areas for bass anglers. Plastic worms and
buzzbaits are being used for bait by most anglers. The fainter the light the greater the bite.
Crappie can be caught along grass edges early and late in the day. The steeper the drop
adjacent to the grass the greater chance of locating crappie. Those crappie that would be
caught would most likely be black. Jigs and minnows are equal
Watts Bar: The lake is full and the surface water temperature is in the low 80's. Bass anglers
are catching fish in the primary areas along ledges, humps or structure. Jigs and plastic worms are the primary baits being selected by many. The number along with the quality of fish being
caught has not been impressive. Night anglers are having slightly better results. Crappie
anglers are catching a few around docks and open water structure. Bigger crappie and mostly
white crappie are being picked from the open water structure in the large secondary locations.
Minnows, jigs, and crankbaits are being used for bait. Striped bass are being caught while in
the tailwaters and shad and jigs are the primary striped bass enticers. Many catfish are being
caught on all the typical catfish baits while drifting in the main channel. Most anglers that spend
a lot of time on the lake and catch the greater number of fish have switched to circle hooks.
The hookup requires just a little different technique, but the end results are far better. Mid lake
humps are being fished by anglers using spinner-type lures to catch several dish. Blindly fishing
these areas without doing an electronic investigation is in most times evident with the ending
results.
