South Chattanooga Celebrates 20 Years With Party On July 7

Thursday, June 28, 2012

The Southside community is invited to celebrate the 20th anniversary of its neighborhood branch library on Saturday, July 7, from 10 a.m.–noon. Special activities will include inflatable playground equipment, a family birthday craft project, sidewalk chalk art and a special appearance by the library’s summer mascot Rowdy Raccoon.  A birthday cake and punch will be served.

This is the first Saturday the South Chattanooga branch has ever been open. To better serve its customers, evening hours have also been added. New hours, effective July 1, are Monday, Thursday, and Saturday, from 9 a.m.–6 p.m.; and Tuesday, Wednesday, from 11 a.m.–8 p.m. The branch will be closed on Friday and Sunday.

Robert Drake, the new library branch manager, will be greeting guests. Mr. Drake brings over 25 years of professional library experience to the Southside community.  He will be the first professional librarian to head this branch.

Children who have not joined the library’s summer reading program can register for “Dream Big – Read!” At registration, each child will receive a logbook to track their summer reading.  Any author and title is allowed. When the child has read or listened to 10 books, return the logbook to any library location by Saturday, July 21.  Children who meet their reading goals will earn a certificate and coupons for local attractions. They will also be invited to our Summer Reading Finale – Saturday, July 28, at the First Tennessee Pavilion – to enjoy activities, prize drawings, and free refreshments.  To learn more, call the Children’s Department at 757-5314.

Location Of The Delta Queen Is The Problem

The Delta Queen is a magnificent part of history and in many ways I'm pleased she is in town. Having the boat where she is is the problem. The boat blocks the view of and from the prettiest park in our town. The crew take many of the parking spots around the park leaving families to park across Frazier and schlep their kids, strollers and picnics to the park. You don't get fireworks ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: Aimee Gets New Hands

Aimee Copeland reached for a potato chip and, with a pretty smile, popped it into her mouth and crunched it up. It sounds like nothing but it was an incredible “God moment” just one year after her bout with necrotizing fasciitis capitated the world and left a beautiful young woman with no hands, her left leg removed on one side and a right foot amputated on another. Last May ... (click for more)
