New Year Marks Start Of Recycle Wednesdays

The new year marks the start of Recycle Wednesdays, city public works officials said.

In an effort too increase pickup efficiency, Chattanooga has been divided into four new service areas.

Beginning Jan. 1, curbside recyclables will be collected one Wednesday a month by service area.

Officials said, "Please review the service areas and dates below to ensure that you are prepared for the change in schedule.

"In addition, please review the guidelines below to ensure that you are aware of the materials that are recyclable through curbside and how to properly prepare your items for pickup. Lastly, please review the guidelines for recycling at convenience centers and review the additional locations, effective Jan. 2."

Recyclables in Area 1, which is east of Highway 153 and west of Interstate 75, will be picked up on the first Wednesday of each month. This area includes: Town Hills, Timberwyck, Northern Hills, Hixson, Big Ridge, Hamillville, Valleybrook, Windbrook, Valleybrook Park, North Shore, Murray Hills, Lake Hills, Washington Hills, Lake Vista, Tyner, Mahala Acres and Hickory Valley.

Dates for pick up: January 3, February 7, March 7, April 4, May 2, June 6, July 5, August 1, September 5, October 3, November 7, December 5.

Recyclables in Area 2, which is east of Interstate 75, west of Highway 153 and east of Crest Road, Campbell Street and Bonnie Oaks Drive, will be picked up on the second Wednesday of each month. This area includes: Ooltewah-Ringgold Road, Old Lee Highway, North Twinbrook, Ashwood, Drake Forest, Brandermill, Hamilton Mill, Audobon Hills, Hurricane Creek, Irvin Acres, Rosemere, Royal Oaks, Ashley Mill, Council Fire, Liles Addition, Kenmoor, Radmoor, Bella Vista, Concord Heights, Marimont, Brainerd Hills, Airport Road, Shepherd, Pine Grove, North and South Brainerd, Glendon Place, North and South Crest Road, Brainerd Park, Woodmore, Eastdale, Pin Oak, Foxwood Heights, Indian Hills, Rollingwood, Ridgewood Acres, North Tower, Green Forest, Cherokee Woods and Gaylan Heights.

Dates for pick up: January 10, February 14, March 14, April 11, May 9, June 13, July 11, August 8, September 12, October 10, November 14, December 12.

Recyclables in Area 3, which is west of Crest Road, Campbell Street and Bonnie Oaks Drive, west of Highway 153 and south of the Tennessee River, will be picked up on the third Wednesday of each month.

This area includes: Amnicola, Kings Point, Battery Heights, East Chatanooga, Avondale, Bushtown, Orchard Knob, Churchville, Battery Place, Downtown, Lincoln Park, Fortwood, Glenwood, Highland Park, Ridgedale, Ferger Place, Oak Grove, Foust Addition, East Lake, Clifton Hills, Cedar Hills, Piney Woods, Alton Park, St. Elmo and Tiftonia.

Dates for pickup: January 17, February 21, March 21, April 18, May 16, June 20, July 18, August 15, September 19, October 17, November 21, December 19.

Recyclables in Area 4, which is north of the Tennessee River and west of Highway 153, will be picked up on the fourth Wednesday of each month.
This area includes: Riverview, North Chattanooga, Stuart Heights, Rivermont, Manchester Park, Lupton City, Fairfax Heights, Forest Highland, Brynwood Park, Galaxy, Norcross, Lake Forest, Moccasin Bend, Pineville Road, Whitehall, Signal Hills, Mountain Creek, Spring Valley, Glendale, Cross Creek, Cloverdale, North Glenn and Northwoods.

Dates for pickup: January 24, February 28, March 28, April 25, May 23, June 27, July 25, August 22, September 26, October 24, November 28, December 26.

The following items can be recycled curbside:
- Cardboard
- All paper grades (except shredded)
- Plastic #1 and #2 (bottles with a neck)
- Aluminum cans
- Steel cans (only item that needs food residue washed out)

According to Orange Grove Center, curbside recyclables should be prepared in the following manner:
- All items must be in blue bags, clear bags or a covered bin
- Items do not need to be sorted – all curbside recyclables may be placed in the same bag
- Lids do not need to be removed from plastic recyclables
- Aluminum cans do not need to be crushed and tabs do not need to be removed
- Steel cans are the only items that need food residue washed out

All recyclables that may be collected through curbside service may also be taken to convenience centers. Convenience centers also accept:
- Glass bottles (brown, green and clear)
- Computers and small electronics (no TVs or microwaves)
- Wet cell batteries
- Motor oil
- Shredded paper
- All materials that are recyclable through curbside

Current convenience center locations:
- Warner Park Recycle Center, 1250 East Third St.

Additional convenience centers effective January 2:
- John A. Patten Recreation Center, 3202 Kelly’s Ferry Rd.
- Access Road at DuPont Parkway, with the Refuse Collection Center
- East Brainerd Baseball Complex, end of Batter’s Place Road

Convenience center hours:
- Monday, Tuesday, Friday: 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Wednesday: Closed, curbside collection
- Thursday: Closed, Orange Grove Center clients at sorting facility
- Saturday: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Sunday: 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
