Chattanooga posted its third best win streak in school history with its 14th straight Saturday afternoon, completing the sweep of Furman 10-1.
Chattanooga senior Lacey Swarthout pitched four shutout innings and picked up her 17th win this season striking out six of the 13 batters she faced and allowed just one run. Brittiany Johnson came on in the fifth inning and struck out one, gave up one hit and allowed Furman its only run.
Freshman Tara Tembey and sophomore Brittney Whittier each went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Sophomore Jeannie Cochran led off the UTC half of the first with a walk and then stole second to move into scoring position. Tembey singled through the right side for her first RBI to give Chattanooga an early 1-0 lead. Whittier’s single through the left side plated Ramirez and Tembey and the Lady Mocs led 3-0 after one.
In the third with the bases loaded, Cochran was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Ashlan Clarkson. Tembey followed that with a two-run single to put UTC up 8-0. The Lady Mocs scored four runs on three hits, a walk and a hit batsman in the inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, Marissa Monroe led off with a single and then advanced to second on a passed ball. Whittier picked up her third RBI with a single through the left side. An error and a walk loaded the bases. Furman’s Jessica Mathis walked Amanda Hoiness to force in Whittier for the 10th run of the game.
Amber Nelson and Lynn Parmer each tallied one hit for the Paladins and Megan Jaudon and Colleen Harrison each drew a walk. Furman had a trio of pitchers come into the game. Rachel Henley started the game pitching two-and-a-third innings. She gave up eight earned runs and walked five and notched two strikeouts. Erica Nesselroad came on to pitch the final two-thirds of the third inning, facing seven batters and allowing two hits and two runs with one strikeout and two walks. Jessica Mathis finished the game pitching the fourth.
Chattanooga moves to 28-11 on the year and 6-0 in league play. The Lady Mocs’ longest win streak is 17 games set March 17-April 10 in 2001. A win against Georgia Tech would tie the second longest streak at 15. Swarthout moves to 17-6 on the year and Henley drops to 5-15. Furman is 9-24 overall and 0-3 in league play.
The Lady Mocs return to action Wednesday night at Frost Stadium hosting Georgia Tech in a double header slated to begin at 5:00 p.m.
