Bradley Student Who Jumped From Fast-Moving School Bus Dies
posted October 1, 2004

A 15-year-old Bradley Central High School student who jumped out of a moving school bus died early Saturday morning.

Officials said the bus was going 40-50 miles per hour on
Springplace Road when Rocky Dockery jumped and was seriously hurt.

He hit head first on the pavement, rolled several times and landed in a ditch.

Officials said, based on preliminary
investigation, it appears the student became upset when the driver refused to make an unscheduled stop. He climbed through a window of the bus and jumped.

The bus transports high school students from BCHS to Valley View Elementary School, where they
are transferred to another bus and transported home.

Officers learned the 15-year-old requested a stop at Goodwill Road near his grandparents' residence. The driver refused because she is not allowed to make unscheduled stops under school system policies, it was stated.

The injured student was airlifted by Air Evac Lifeteam medical helicopter to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga for treatment.

Traffic was shut down for almost two hours while the at-scene investigation was conducted.
