Flood Watch In Effect Through Saturday Night No Decision Yet On Whether Weather Will Cancel School Friday posted September 15, 2004 Hamilton County and a wide swath of East Tennessee are under a flood watch through Saturday night - with up to 10 inches possible. There are also warnings of high winds going through the region. Weather forecasters said, "The remnants of Hurricane Ivan are expected to move slowly northeast toward the Tennessee Valley and southern Appalachians today through Saturday. Abundant tropical moisture will continue to move toward the region with periods of heavier rainfall possible beginning tonight through Saturday. "Rainfall amounts between 6 and 10 inches are possible by Saturday including the Chattanooga area. "Rainfall amounts between 5 and 8 inches by Saturday evening are possible across the northern plateau and the far eastern Tennessee mountains. For the central and northern Tennessee Valley... including Knoxville and the Tri- Cities... rainfall amounts between 2 and 4 inches are possible." Officials with Hamilton County Schools said they are closely monitoring the movements of Hurricane Ivan and predicated heavy rains for this area through the local Emergency Services office. Any decision regarding school on Friday will be announced Thursday. Several high school football games planned for Friday have been rescheduled because of the pending inclement weather. Hamilton County educators are scheduled to “shop” for free school supplies at the Teacher Supply Depot on Saturday from 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. A rain date has been set for Saturday, Sept. 25. At the Convention Center, Executive Director Tim Riddle said staff would be briefed on safe areas at the facility in the event of high winds. He said the main areas that would be utilized would be the north end of the service corridor as well as the two lower levels of the parking garage. The City Stormwater Management office announced that with the impending arrival of the remnants of Hurricane Ivan, the city of Chattanooga requests that all active construction sites take immediate action to minimize the impact from the storm. Officials said, "This includes slope protection, stabilization of emergency overflows and inspection and maintenance of all erosion and sediment controls. Site superintendents are encouraged to move all temporary fuel tanks, drums, barrels or other containers holding chemicals, and items that could block the drainage system away from areas where concentrated flow could occur. Your assistance is greatly appreciated in protecting water quality in Chattanooga." The Dixie Group, Inc. (Nasdaq/NM:DXYN) announced today that, due to threats posed by Hurricane Ivan, it has temporarily suspended operations at its carpet manufacturing and distribution facilities located in Atmore and Saraland, Alabama, as of noon Tuesday. The Company's Saraland facilities are located approximately 10 miles north of Mobile and its Atmore facility is located approximately 50 miles northeast of Mobile. The facilities will remain closed until the threat of the hurricane has passed. Commenting on the announcement, Daniel K. Frierson, chairman and chief executive officer, said, "The National Hurricane Center currently is predicting that the hurricane will make landfall near Mobile, Alabama, early Thursday morning. Although we regret any inconvenience to our customers caused by the suspension of these operations, the safety of our associates is our number one priority." Mr. Frierson added, "Although we do not anticipate any significant damage, our affected operations are adequately covered by property, casualty and business interruption insurance. Nevertheless, the full extent and impact of any disruptions are impossible to predict at this time." The Company will release additional information as soon as it has had an opportunity to determine what effect, if any, the hurricane has had on its operations. |
