City Council Votes 6-3 Against $19,000 More For The Library
posted January 13, 2010

The City Council on Tuesday night voted 6-3 against giving an additional $19,000 to the Bicentennial Library.

Chairman Jack Benson had favored the move, saying when County Commissioner John Brooks decided to give $16,000 of his discretionary funds to the library and Jim Coppinger another $3,000 that it put the county allocation to the library ahead of the city.

Chairman Benson said for several years the city had given more to the library than the county.

Several council members said they are library fans, but they said the budget had already been set and it should not be changed based on gifts from two County Commission members.

Deborah Scott also said the council needed to be careful about taking the money from its $235,000 contingency fund.

Voting in favor were council members Benson, Sally Robinson and Manny Rico.

Opposed were council members Scott, Peter Murphy, Pam Ladd, Andrae McGary, Russell Gilbert and Carol Berz.
