Speed Limits Downtown Should Not Be Reduced - And Response (2) posted November 4, 2009 It would be interesting to know what speed these local politicians are driving while on MLK. Having a speed limit of 25 mph on one of the main corridors in and out of the city is unbelievable. Are these pedestrians that are worried about crossing the road safely using the intersections with traffic signals where they cross? Eddie Rahm Chattanooga * * * Due to the focus on tourism, I believe that the whole downtown section, including MLK, should be transitioned to foot traffic only, except for continual metro services for emergency and public transport. Erect large parking garages at the outside perimeters. Just get it done. David J Cadieux * * * This morning I read Mr Van Winkle's opinion about speed limits on Martin Luther King Boulevard, where I happen to live. I left to drive to Brainerd Road shortly thereafter. A van on Bailey passed me going probably 50 mph, and that sort of behavior continued as I made my way almost as far as East Brainerd Road. I am witness to a great deal of traffic from my windows. Virtually nobody goes 25 mph, as he states. People on Brainerd Road between the tunnel and Belvoir don't drive at 35 mph, and after Belvoir at 40 mph. Surely you get the picture by now. I can't tell, driving around town, what the maximum is before the traffic police step in. They watch this road a lot and stop many cars. If the speed limit is raised to match the traffic's speed, there is probably no end to it. We need a better answer. J. C. Magrath |
