Osprey Attack Caught on Camera!
Amazing Photos by Bret Douglas
posted June 29, 2009

Bret Douglas, an avid birdwatcher and photographer was witness to an amazing event recently... and he caught it on camera.

Douglas writes, "I was witness to an interesting event Sunday night at the Blythe Ferry boat ramp.

"There was a lot of boat traffic on the ramp so the mama osprey had vacated the nest and was watching the 3 chicks from her perch high up in a tree.

"About this time a Great Blue Heron came casually flying by, but got a little too close to the nest for mama's comfort. So she swooped down and nailed the GBH right in the back.
The feathers were flying as the heron fell in a heap into the river, and I thought he was a goner, for sure. However, he managed to right himself and fly away (as the osprey chased him) a bit wiser and a bit lighter in the back where the osprey had tore out a chunk.

"I managed to capture a few frames of the event which I am attaching to this e-mail.

"Some of the others I took today can be found in my gallery of recent photos.
