Getting The Right Information On Street Work
posted June 27, 2009

While I worked for city public works, street repair seemed to be a popular subject whether I was with friends or on the job. In the city of Chattanooga, you should either ask someone in the city engineer's office, the traffic engineer's office, or call the 311 number and they will either take your call or redirect you to the correct number or person.

Sometimes the project is one that is funded by TDOT and sub-contracted to others. Calling the local TDOT office usually results in an answer if the road in question is a state route, such as Rossville Boulevard.

Sometimes the road is left in the roughened state to act as a non-skid surface if traffic crashes are posing a problem at that particular site.

You need to know whether it is in the city or county and direct your call accordingly. Either way the calling is dependent on a little work by you to find the answer so be patient.

Street paving funds are a big topic. In Chattanooga your council person should be knowledgeable about whether the city, state, or county is involved in the work. Good luck.
