Chattanooga Firefighters Save 3 Snakes And Lizard In Home Fire
posted January 6, 2009

A Chattanooga family of five is temporarily homeless after a fire was accidentally set in their home, forcing the residents to evacuate. Firefighters rescued three snakes and a Gecko lizard while putting out the blaze.

The Chattanooga Fire Department received the alarm at noon Tuesday and responded to 1705 Mulberry St. with four fire companies.

Capt. Scott Davis with Engine 5 said flames were shooting out the front door when the first firefighters arrived on the scene. The firefighters made a quick interior attack and got the fire out in roughly 15 minutes.

While putting out the fire, Capt. Davis said the firefighters rescued three snakes and a Gecko lizard. Capt. Davis estimated the dollar loss at around $20,000.

The cause of the fire will be listed as accidental. Capt. Davis said someone was heating up grease on the stove, but apparently forgot about it. One of the children in the house discovered the resulting fire in the kitchen and alerted the rest of the family. The two adults and two children all got out safely.

Volunteers with the Chattanooga Red Cross chapter were called to the scene to provide assistance to the family. Chattanooga police and Hamilton County EMS also provided assistance on the scene.
