CreateHere announced that applications for the 2009 MakeWork grant program are now available.
MakeWork provides financial assistance to innovative artists and artisans in Chattanooga, for career advancement or for the pursuit of larger projects.
This year, CreateHere will offer $150,000 in grant monies through this unique approach to community development, it was stated.
Officials said, "Nearly two million Americans are artists. Artists have the sheer numbers-and potential financial leverage-to make waves, even in a struggling economy. When artists are empowered, financially or otherwise, local economies thrive.
"MakeWork grants provide financial stimulus that invigorate Chattanooga's creative community. The bottom line is that this impressive group affects the local economy by creating a distinctive community and generating more dollars that will be kept local.
"MakeWork is now in its second year. Last year's grant winners included culinary artists and writers, musicians and muralists. Their work has already had a powerful impact on the community, by documenting local character, and engaging the public with performances, discussions, and showcases.
"It's clear that creative individuals have an impact on Chattanooga. Local artists in our community are a force for growth in the local economy. CreateHere's MakeWork grants reinforce the value of this unique sector of the workforce and build their ability to help shape Chattanooga as an emerging creative economy."
