Hamilton County Genealogy Gets Easier - And Response posted January 5, 2009 Genealogists all over the world who have reason to do research in Hamilton County, Tn., will be thrilled to hear the latest news from the office of Hamilton County Court Clerk, Bill Knowles, that marriage records have been and will be posted online. I have been an avid genealogist for 15 years. I started at a time when most everything had to be accessed at libraries, cemeteries and courthouses. And the local library will continue to be a great asset to anyone doing ancestral research. The announcement can be read in its entirety under "Breaking News" at this website. The article states that Hamilton County marriage records, from 1857 to 1919 and from 1985 to 2008, have been posted online. Records from 1819 to 1856 do not exist. And records from 1920 to 1984 will be posted when the project is complete. Please read the article which spells out the procedure to access this information. Remember, that from 1871 to 1919, a portion of Hamilton County became James County and those records are not included in Hamilton County. The Hamilton County Genealogical Society, formed in 2001, has worked to provide cemetery records for many cemeteries in the county. That website is: www.HCTGS.com Most all cemeteries have a survey there. The ones not posted, or incomplete, are: National Cemetery, Forest Hills Cemetery, Chattanooga Memorial Cemetery, and Greenwood Cemetery. Hamilton Memorial Gardens is incomplete. There are a few small cemeteries we have yet to do, but not many. And several, especially the larger active ones, need constant updating. At our website, there are many other records and services. With online services such as Ancestry.com, much investigation, especially certain census records, which required long hours at the library are now at your fingertips, from your home computer. Many thanks to Bill Knowles and his staff for making this information available. Jim Holcomb Hamilton County Genealogical Society Cemetery Committee Chairman * * * Congratulations to County Clerk Bill Knowles and his staff for posting Hamilton County marriage records online. This is a major resource which will be used and appreciated by researchers and genealogists. Our library department (website: www.lib.chattanooga.gov ) will be directing researchers to this new online database.
