Windstone, Hurricane Creek Residents Fight Sewage Problem posted August 19, 2008 An attorney told the City Council on Tuesday that residents of the Windstone and Hurricane Creek subdivisions are facing a sewage problem that is threatening the health of some residents. Attorney John Anderson said the problem is so bad that one resident, Bob Miller, has been told by the Centers for Disease Control that he is suffering from chronic hydrogen sulfide poisoning. Mr. Anderson blamed the problem on a pump station at Windstone operated by Dave Hammel of the private Rainbro Company. He said there should not be more than 10 parts per million of hydrogen sulfide in effluent from the pumping station, but he said a recent reading was 60 parts per million. He said it has been as high as 400-500 parts per million. He said at some point it could be toxic to humans. Attorney Anderson said the pumping station is in Georgia, but it is sent over a hill into the Chattanooga sewage system. He asked city officials to send a letter to the operator declaring they would not accept the effluent if it has high levels of hydrogen sulfide. He also said there is a terrible smell from the pumping station. Councilman Jack Benson said he had visited the neighborhood and saw "feces in the yards of some residents." |
