Hamilton County has received favorable news from the Environmental Protection Agency regarding the 24-hour fine particle air pollution standard, Chattanooga/Hamilton County Air Pollution Control director Bob Colby said.

The EPA, in a letter to Gov. Phil Bredesen received Tuesday, said Hamilton County is not among those in "non attainment" status.

Those placed in non attainment include Knox, Anderson, Blount, Loudon and part of Roane.

Mr. Colby said Hamilton County's readings were technically high enough to place the county under non attainment.

However, he said the EPA accepted the county's contention that some of the measured fine particles related to forest fires on Signal Mountain and to Fourth of July fireworks.

Mr. Colby said, had the county been placed on non attainment, that would have put into effect a number of new governmental restrictions aimed at lowering the fine particles in the air.

He said, "We are obviously pleased that EPA agreed with some of our contentions about what caused our fine particle readings."
