Third baseman Mat Gamel was tabbed by Minor League News as Minor League Baseball’s top prospect in its MLN FAB50 for 2008.

The Huntsville Stars third baseman is the second third sacker from the Southern League to hold down the top spot in as many years.

Montgomery’s Evan Longoria, the league’s reigning Most Valuable Player, was No. 1 last year. Longoria is playing with the American League East Division's leading Tampa Rays.

Jay Bruce, who played 16 games for the 2008 Lookouts, was named as Baseball America's Minor League 2008 Player of the Year.

Many Major League scouts consider the Southern League to be the premier Double-A league.
