Chatt-A-Birdin'
by Riverwalk Birding Club
posted August 5, 2008

The introduction of the digital camera took most of the work out of Birding, with a good digital camera you can take very good bird photo’s by just having it handy when you see a bird. But if you are after some rare birds and some rare shots then you must work at it, that is exactly what a couple RWBC members do day after day.

Charles Dean and Richard Schier take great pride in their bird photo’s and they should as they both work hard to get the good shots. These photo’s below of a rare Least Bittern are proof enough that Charles and Richard didn’t just happen to be in the right place at the right time.

They are up and out at the crack of day, they know where to go to find these birds and they have the equipment and know how to use it. These shots of a Least Bittern took days to locate the Bitterns, then many hours observing where it spent it’s time. Soon they noticed it returned to the same spot each day about the same time, so they would be there with equipment in place and just wait on the Bittern to arrive.

This is not a large bird, only 11 to 14 inches, it does not walk around the yard waiting on someone with a camera, it is a master at hiding, so you must have a keen eye to locate it even when you know where it is. You also must figure in the suns position as the proper amount of light is important when photographing a bird hidden in the reeds.

We hope you enjoy these great photo’s of a rare bird and we thank Charles and Richard for sharing them.
