Kendall Thornton, a first-year art teacher launching her career in education at New Hope Middle School, listens Thursday during teacher induction at the Whitfield County Career Academy. Whitfield County Schools welcomed new teachers to the district during the two-day workshop on Thursday and Friday (July 31-Aug. 1).
A group of 88 fresh teachers gathered for a two-day workshop led by county school administrators and Jack Edwards, a senior associate with the Louisville, Ky.-based Schlechty Center for Education Reform.

“During our teacher induction I found the room was filled with teachers at all levels of age and experience, from teachers fresh out of college to experienced teachers to professionals seeking a new career,” Superintendent Katie Brochu said. “With teachers like these who understand that students and their families are the customers we serve, I feel sure our students will gain more confidence in themselves and continue to achieve at high levels.”

Teachers are back in their classrooms during preplanning this week to get ready for the new school year that begins Friday, Aug. 8.

Whitfield County Schools officials began working with the Schlechty Center several years ago to hone their vision and begin uniting teachers across all schools and grade levels.
“The Schlechty Center for Leadership in School Reform is an organization that provides high-quality and responsive support to those who are leading school reform efforts across the nation,” according to the center’s web site at www.schlechtycenter.org. “The Center’s staff primarily works with public school leaders to transform schools from organizations that produce compliance and attendance to organizations that nurture attention and commitment at all levels in the system.”
