The Maclellan Foundation Announces Church Based After School Tutoring Program posted August 1, 2008 The Maclellan Family Foundations of Chattanooga has announced a new initiative to encourage local churches to develop after-school tutoring programs for our public school students. Our students face daunting challenges yearly. Research shows that even a small amount of time spent with a caring mentor can make a tremendous impact on the student's academic and social progress, leading to higher grades, better test scores, better attendance, and less time in trouble with school or other authorities. A free training for churches will be held Saturday, August 9 from 8:30 a.m.– 4 p.m. at First Centenary United Methodist Church in downtown Chattanooga. The training will be conducted by Dr. Amy Sherman, Director of the Center on Faith in Community Life. Attendance is free, but reservations must be made by calling Doug Daugherty at 488-0435 or email him at Doug@Maclellan.net. Lunches will be available for those who have reserved them for $10.00. This seminar is a great time to start developing such a ministry at your local church or exploring whether or not such a ministry is feasible. Churches may bring as many representatives as they would like. The Hamilton County Department of Education supports this initiative and has suggested the following schools as ones that would benefit most from such programs: Alpine Crest, Clifton Hills, East Lake, East Side, Hixson Elementary, Red Bank Elementary, Birchwood, Brown Academy, Donaldson, Hardy, Harrison, Hillcrest, Orchard Knob Elementary, Spring Creek, Woodmore, Sale Creek, East Brainerd Elementary, Tyner Middle and Howard Middle. Tutoring can be done at the church or at the school, depending on the church's preference. Volunteers can be as young as older High School students to senior adults. The programs can be as short as an hour a day once a week, to three hours five days a week. Churches will cooperate closely with school teachers and principals to make sure they are working together. |
