Georgia’s Unemployment Rate Unchanged In June, Up Over Year
posted July 17, 2008

The Georgia Department of Labor reported Thursday that the state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was unchanged at 5.7 percent from May to June, but was up 1.3 percent from 4.4 percent in June of 2007.

The current adjusted state rate, which is two-tenths of one percent higher than the U.S. seasonally-adjusted rate of 5.5 percent, continued to top the national rate for the past five months.

Preliminary unadjusted data from May to June show Georgia lost 21,900 payroll jobs, a decrease of one-half of one percent. The job losses came across-the-board in manufacturing, construction, trade, and services. The metro areas of the state and their job changes include:

- Albany, down 100, or two-tenths of one percent, from 64,600 to 64,500.
- Athens, up 400, or one-half of one percent, from 83,200 to 83,600.
- Atlanta, down 10,900, or four-tenths of one percent, from 2,479,100 to 2,468,200.
- Augusta, down 1,100, or one-half of one percent, from 219,800 to 218,700.
- Columbus, down 200, or two-tenths of one percent, from 121,800 to 121,600.
- Dalton, unchanged at 78,000.
- Gainesville, down 300, or four-tenths of one percent, from 77,700 to 77,400.
- Macon, down 300, or three-tenths of one percent, from 100,700 to 100,400.
- Savannah, down 600, or four-tenths of one percent, from 163,400 to 162,800.
- Valdosta, down 700, or 1.2 percent, from 57,000 to 56,300.
