The EMS/Trauma Division of Tennessee’s Department of Health appointed Beth Phillips, RN, Erlanger Health System’s Trauma Program Manager, as the state’s new Trauma Nurse Surveyor.

According to Joe Phillips, State EMS/Trauma Director, the appointment comes at the recommendation by trauma peers throughout the state, an extensive trauma and critical care background and an invitation by the State EMS/Trauma Director.

“She will be the primary nursing inspector for Trauma Centers in Tennessee,” said Roger Forgey, Erlanger Senior vice president of Regional Operations and Business Development. “This is a huge honor for Beth personally and for Erlanger and recognizes her commitment and expertise in trauma care.”

Ms. Phillips’ duties as State Nurse Surveyor will include participating in a four-member team of inspectors who travel to sites that are seeking trauma certification or re-certification. An out-of state surgeon, in-state trauma surgeon and the State EMS/Trauma Director along with the Nurse Surveyor work together to validate resources for trauma care and ensure each center is abiding by state and national standards for trauma centers.

Components of the site inspection process include morbidity and mortality review, peer review, outreach education, process and quality improvement, trauma call coverage, disaster planning and research.

Eleven years of experience working at Erlanger has provided Ms. Phillips with the skills and requirements to fill the Nurse Surveyor position. She worked as a trauma resuscitation nurse on the trauma team, became Trauma Coordinator and has worked two years in her current position as Trauma Program Manager.

“I am looking forward to becoming a member of the team and positively impacting trauma care within the state,” said Ms. Phillips. “I am honored and excited about this new opportunity and to expand my knowledge and experience in the field of trauma.”
