Volkswagen To Decide On U.S. Location By July "At The Latest" Bredesen, Corker In Town For Private Chamber Events posted May 17, 2008 Volkswagen plans to decide on where to build an automotive plant in the United States by July - at the latest. Stefan Jacoby, VW of America CEO, was interviewed by USA Today. He listed Tennessee, Alabama and Michigan as still in the running to get the huge plant. On Thursday there were day-long Chamber of Commerce events at the Chattanoogan hotel that sources said may be related to the city's bid for the Volkswagen plant. Automobile officials were reportedly involved in the private sessions. Gov. Phil Bredesen and Sen. Bob Corker were in town to assist. On Thursday evening, an event was held at Sen. Corker's house in Riverview related to the out-of-town guests. Mr. Jacoby told the newspaper that the new plant should be in operation by 2010. He also said the plant might produce Audis and Porsches as well as Volkswagens. Local officials are mum on Chattanooga's prospects for landing the $1 billion plant, which could employ up to 2,000 people when it opens. Mayor Ron Littlefield on Friday told the Civitan Club he could not comment. |
