Baylor, Father Ryan Split in D-II Baseball by B.B. Branton posted May 17, 2008 The Chattanooga Lookouts are scheduled for a post-game fireworks show tonight at AT&T Field tonight, but across the river at Wyatt McMahan Field, Baylor and Father Ryan decided to light up the Baylor scoreboard with an offensive show of their own a night earlier in a sub-state baseball doubleheader. The two prep teams, battling for a spot in next week’s TSSAA state tournament semifinals, put up 38 runs on 39 hits Friday night. The two teams split the TSSAA Division II-AA sub-state doubleheader – the Irish won the opener, 15-1, and Baylor won the second game, 15-5 – and play a third and deciding game today at noon at Baylor. In the opener, The Purple Irish from Nashville used a six-run, third to defeat Baylor, 15-1. Middle Tennessee State signee Justin Guidry was the winning pitcher allowing five hits, while Baylor’s Tyler Massey (11-1), a University of Virginia signee, suffered his first loss of the season and only his second in his two years (20-2) wearing the red and gray for coach Gene Etter. Richard Howden, Joe Seul and Drew Brown had home runs for Father Ryan. Baylor showed why it is 30-6 on the season in the nightcap with 12 runs in the last two innings for a 17-5 triumph. Red Raider home runs were by Craig Dylan and Will Stansell. Baylor’s Chase Riemer (7-0) scattered five hits in recording the complete game win. Brown was tagged with the loss. Baylor led 5-0 in the fourth before Dylan Golden’s two-out grand slam pulled the Irish to within one. Baylor flexed its offensive muscles with five runs in the fifth and a seven spot in the sixth. Seul hit his second round tripper of the night in the Irish sixth. McCallie, Christian Brothers Split: In Memphis, McCallie (26-11) scored a run in the eighth inning to defeat defending champion Christian Brothers, 5-4, in the first game of a sub-state doubleheader Friday. Senior Taylor Smith (8-2) was the winning pitcher. Christian Brothers (33-7) won 11-1 in the second game. The two teams play a third and deciding game today at 2 p.m. EDT in Memphis. Contact B.B.
