Wilbert Leon “Pop” Newbille Sr., 80, of Rossville, died on Wednesday, May 14, 2008.
He was born in Chattanooga, to the late Ernest Leon Newbille and Nola Mae Long Newbille Jones. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He retired from the city of Chattanooga where he worked at Lovell Field in the maintenance department. He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Rossville.
He enjoyed playing and coaching softball teams in Chattanooga for several teams such as Taco Bell, Red Food Stores, D.M. Steward, Tops Men’s Wear and Ridge Furnishing. He also enjoyed bowling at Holiday Bowl for the following teams: ABC, Senior Games, Red Food and the Monday Night’s Men’s League.
He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter-in-law, Carol Newbille.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jerry Newbille of Rossville; daughters and sons-in-law, Nola Brown of Rossville, Wilma and Warren Bivens of East Ridge, Lois and Vic Dowding of East Ridge; sons and daughter-in-law, Leon Newbille of East Ridge, Bill and Jody Newbille of Rossville; brother and sister-in-law, David and Linda Jones of Soddy Daisy; 15 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 3-9 p.m., all day Sunday and Monday morning prior to the service.
Funeral services will be held Monday at noon in the funeral home chapel with Pastors Paul O’Neal, Derrell O’Neal and Bill Newbille officiating. Burial will follow in Chattanooga Veterans National Cemetery, Chattanooga.
