Sarah West hit a dramatic two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning Friday and DeKalb County surprised Hixson, 4-2, in a Class AA state softball sectional at Hixson.
Hixson (19-5) came into the game as the Region 3 champion, while DeKalb County (27-9) had lost to Goodpasture, 9-0, in the Region 4 title game.
DeKalb County earned a berth in next week's BlueCross Spring Fling in Murfreesboro.
Winning pitcher Morgan Page started the seventh-inning rally with a one-out single. West then drove a fastball over the 200-foot sign in center field for the game-winning hit.
“It was right down the middle,’’ West said. “But I don’t know why you’re talking to me. It wasn’t just me. It was the team.’’
Hixson took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third on a two-out RBI single by Whitney Galloway. The Lady Wildcats pushed their lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Brittany Roberts.
In the meantime, senior pitcher Dawon Millwood was pitching perfect softball. She didn’t allow a runner through the first four innings, while striking out five.
In the top of the fifth, however, Millwood walked Kristina Stephens and West followed with a single. Shay Sullivan then tied the game at 2 with a double.
DeKalb County had only four hits off Millwood, who struck out eight and walked one. West was 2-for-3 and hit her fifth home run of the season.
Page improved to 13-2 while giving up only three hits, striking out four and walking four.
Millwood ended the season at 18-4.
