James "Jake" Hodges, 87, died on Friday, May 16, 2008.

He was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga. Jake retired from U.S. Pipe in 1985 after 45 years of service.

A resident of the Lookout Valley community, he always helped others, especially those in need. He joined the Lookout Valley Lions Club in 1951 where over many years of service he served as president for seven terms, district governor for one term, was named Lion of the Year and Lion of the Decade and after many years of dedicated service was awarded lifelong membership. During this time he also served on the Board of Directors for the Lion’s Eye Bank.

He was instrumental in building a new house of worship for Mountain View Presbyterian Church. This was a project very dear to his heart. He served on the Board of Deacons as well.

Jake will be greatly missed by his surviving family members which include his cherished wife of 68 years, Mary Hodges; their only son and daughter-in-law, Ralph and Shirley Hodges; three grandchildren, Thomas Hodges, Melanie Carter, and Michelle Sewell; four step-grandchildren, John Brophy, Mike Brophy, David Brophy and Shelley Gunter; 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter; one sister, Helen Batey; and one brother-in-law and wife, Angelo and Jean Fella; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to all of the wonderful caretakers at St. Barnabas Assisted Living and St. Barnabas Nursing Home.

Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home with Rev. Walter Gienapp officiating. Burial will follow at Chattanooga Memorial Park, Red Bank, Tn.

Arrangements are by the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory & Florist, 404 S. Moore Road.
