Decorated WWII Veteran Retired From U.S. Pipe And Foundry

Fred J. Worth Sr., 90, of Hixson, died on Wednesday evening, May 14, 2008, at his daughter’s resident.

A lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area, he was a charter member of the St. Jude Catholic Church and was a graduate of Notre Dame High School, Wiley School of Business and Class #12 Dale Carnegie Course. He was retired from U.S. Pipe & Foundry with 41 years of service.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Air Force. Serving over three years in the Air Force, he also served six months with the 8th Air Force in England, flying 32 combat missions over Germany, France, Belgium and Holland. He was also served in the D-Day invasion of France on June 6, 1944. He received the 4-AIR medals, The Distinguished Flying Cross and several B battle stars. All of the crew returned home safely. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and the VFW.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Helen Worth.

He is survived by two sons, Fred J. Worth Jr., of Hixson, and Richard A. Worth, of Walnut, Ca.; one daughter, Peggy A. St. Hilaire, of Sweetwater, Tn.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
