Yellow Deli People Have Not Been Good Neighbors
posted May 9, 2008

I just wanted to contribute to the conversation about the Yellow
Deli's reopening. I am too young to have been around the first time
the Yellow Deli was in town, so the cult-or-not question is too
complicated and riddled with he-said-she-said and local politics for me to touch.

However, I am of the age that I attend UTC and live in their dorms during the school year, and I can say that the Yellow Deli people have not been the best neighbors. My roommates have greatly enjoyed their sandwiches, and we all appreciate the magnificent
renovation of what used to be an ugly, shoddy old building. However, their grueling construction schedule ignored their sleeping neighbors just yards away as they sawed, hammered, and lit the construction site with stadium lights until midnight or beyond, even after several complaints were made.

When construction was finished, the deli's atmospheric folk music blared loud enough to compete with my computer's built in speakers and to interfere with being able to study or drift off to sleep before midnight. If I were playing music that loud in my dorm, my neighbors surely would have complained.

Whatever the Yellow Deli may have done in the past is just that - in the past. However, their return to Chattanooga has been one marked by less than considerate behavior.
