Lost Souls? posted May 9, 2008 Reading all the letters regarding Yellow Deli reminds me of an experience I had myself in a smallish Southern town a few years ago. I wrote a book review column for a Christian publication for several years. I bent over backwards to make sure whatever I wrote followed Christian beliefs though my column didn't cover "religious" books per se. I consider myself a Christian, though I belong to a church (with about 16 million members) that is not considered "mainstream." Some of the advertisers decided they didn't think I was a good influence, might warp "real" Christian readers, and threatened to remove their financial support if the publisher continued to let me write a column (which I did for free). The publisher reread all my columns and found nothing offensive or biased, but could not afford to let me continue to write. A couple of these "Christians" called me at my workplace, asking me if I considered myself a Christian. Neither caller identified himself, which didn't seem very polite. I wonder if the Yellow Deli "cult" members are a lost cause, if they should be tried and hung or tarred and feathered. I could be wrong, but all the teachings of Christ I am familiar with assume that we are all God's children and maybe instead of acting like this is Salem, maybe someone should be trying to save their souls, huh? I also was under the assumption that we live in a country that allows us to have some religious freedom and worship according to the dictates of our conscience. Unless children or goats are being abused or molested, really, I don't want to know what your religion or love life is to eat at a business or shop or work with someone, but we all have the right to think whatever we choose, right or wrong.
